MITCNC Event
Mountain Play Plus a Hike
Jun 08 - North Bay

The musical Kinky Boots is playing at the Cushing amphitheater on Mt. Tamalpais. After the show we will hike back down to Mill Valley. A shuttle bus for the return is available for non-hikers.

9:45 AM meet at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley. Parking is free. If the lot is full, there is plenty of street parking available along Miller Ave. Catch the shuttle to the amphitheater. Cost is $10, cash only. First buses leave at 10 AM. The performance starts at 2 PM and runs about 2 1/2 hours. There is pre-show entertainment and a festive picnic atmosphere. One can also take some short hikes after staking out one's seat.

After the show we plan to hike a scenic 6 miles downhill to Mill Valley. Many people do. Or one can take a shuttle back back to the starting point.

There are Porta-Potties at the amphitheater and at a couple of points along the hike. More information is available in the hike description below.

Cell service is good in Mill Valley but marginal at the amphitheater.

Description:

The Mountain Play is 100+ year tradition on Mt. Tamalpais. Recent productions have been Broadway musicals. This year's show is Kinky Boots with music and lyrics by Cindy Lauper. The high quality performances take place in a 3750 seat classic stone amphitheater in a wooded setting high up on Mt. Tam. Beyond the stage there are views of San Francisco and the bay.

Mt. Tam is noted for its many hiking trails.  We will take the shuttle up from Tamalpais HS to the amphitheater. After the show we'll hike down to Mill Valley and then take a shuttle back to the high school. Non-hikers can take a shuttle directly back to the high school.

A description of the hike can be found here:

What to Bring:

Have a good breakfast, bring snacks, water and a lunch. However, there is food for sale at the show, including a selection of BBQ items, hot and cold beverages, snacks, ice cream, and snow-cones https://www.mountainplay.org/mountainvisit/#food

People often bring coolers with food and beverages. A shuttle will carry coolers down to Mill Valley so one can hike unencumbered.

Most of the seats are in the sun so light clothing, sunblock and a hat are recommended. However last June we were greeted by fog at the amphitheater and it stayed cool and breezy all day. So check the weather before you depart and dress in layers. The seats of the amphitheater are stone so a cushion or foam pad is advisable. These can also be rented at the amphitheater.

Directions:

Take Hwy 101 north to the Hwy 1 Stinson Beach/Mill Valley exit (#445B).  Follow Hwy 1 north then straight on Almonte Blvd, stay right onto Miller Ave. Tamalpais HS is at 700 Miller Ave on the left.

Carpooling:

Carpooling is highly recommended. We plan to set up a carpool site and will send the the link to all who RSVP. We do not assume responsibility for carpool arrangements (we merely do so as a courtesy to help hikers make their own plans)

Rain policy:

If there's any ambiguity about the weather, you can check the forecast the morning of the show. The NWS forecast for Mt. Tam may be found at https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-122.60297267776825&lat=37.92060500042345#.XNEPkaZ7nDY

When needed a status message will be posted at 7 AM on the Mountain Play home page.
