MITCNC Event
Hike: Montara Mountain (Peninsula)
Dec 09

Distance:        7.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:  1100' (easy to moderate)
Estimated Time:  5 hours

Cost:  $6 cash parking fee

Description:
This hike will start from San Pedro Valley County Park, near the town of Pacifica.  See http://parks.smcgov.org/san-pedro-valley-park for details about this local park.  The hike will take us up into the scenic rolling hills along the west side of the Peninsula.  If we're lucky enough to have clear skies, then we'll enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific coast, the coastal mountains, San Francisco, Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo and perhaps some other landmarks.

What to Bring:
The usual:  Water, lunch, a hat, sunblock and some snacks.
Dress warmly in layers, including a wind breaker and a rain shell.
Dogs and other pets are not allowed at San Pedro Park.

Directions:
When coming to San Pedro Valley Park from the north (San Francisco) or the south (San Jose), use Highway 280 to Highway 1.  Take Highway 1 south to the City of Pacifica.  Turn east (i.e., left) onto Linda Mar Boulevard (for a landmark at that corner, look for a shopping mall with a Safeway in it).  Follow Linda Mar Boulevard unit it ends at Oddstad Boulevard.  Turn right on Oddstad Boulevard. Proceed on Oddstad Boulevard one block to the park entrance.

See https://goo.gl/maps/FdS5honXF6N2 for a map.

We will meet in front of the Visitor's Center, near the entrance.   Note if the
entry gate is manned, you will need to pay $6 cash to get into the parking area.

Carpooling:
Carpooling is always a good idea.  If people want to get into a carpool, we've set up an unmoderated discussion group you can use to set up carpools.  To join it, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcnchikers_carpooling and then send a message to mitcnchikers_carpooling@groups.yahoo.com, or post from the web interface at the above address.  This requires you to get a free yahoo account; sorry about this, but in our experience, they've been harmless and respect your spam preferences.  Unfortunately (cynics cackle here), the old email signup interface seems to have stopped working.  In any case, in the message, be sure to include where you're coming from, contact information and how many of you there are.

Rain policy:

If there's any ambiguity about the weather on the day of the hike, you can check the forecast the morning of the hike.  The organizer will make an effort to
contact everyone who RSVP’ed.

If it's raining significantly, the hike is off.  If the weather is ambiguous, we will send out an email to the mitcnchikers@yahoogroups.com list on the morning of the hike. You can easily join that email list by going to the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcnchikers/ web page and clicking on the "Join This Group!" button.  After you're on the list, you'll receive emails about each upcoming hike ~1 week in advance.  The volume on that list is very low (~2 emails/month), so spam won't be a problem.

Disclaimers:
Joining any hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume any and all risks associated with the activities.  By registering or attending this event, participants agree to the conditions posted at: http://northerncalifornia.alumclub.mit.edu/s/1314/images/gid25/editor_documents/event_documents/liability_waiver.pdf
