Bike Ride: Mount Umunhum - Spectacular View of Bay Area
Sep 17 - South Bay

Distance: ~26 miles
Difficulty: 9 out of 10
Terrain: paved road with rolling and sustained uphills (~4,000 feet of total climbing)
Type: Road

Mount Umunhum is one of the three highest peaks in the entire Bay Area (along with Mount Tamalpais and Mount Hamilton which form the climbing trinity). Please note that this is NOT a ride for beginners.  You would need to be an experienced cyclist with reasonable fitness to make it to the top.  However, once you are at the top, you will be rewarded with a one-of-a-kind STUNNING view of the entire Bay Area – from Silicon Valley to Berkeley to the beaches of Santa Cruz in one panorama.  Needless to say, Mount Um is on the bucket list of any road cycling enthusiast.

The top of Hicks Road North/Mount Umunhum is very steep and scenic and may be the most difficult in the hill rich Bay Area of California. It carries a variable grade and little traffic over much of its length. The first mile is over double digit grade and then Hicks Road crests. At that point descend a very short distance and quickly turn right on Mount Umunhum. Very soon you are climbing again over gradually increasing slope with more severe slope ahead. Continue through another very steep mile before the grade eases and rolls a bit.

Just a gentle reminder, please remember to eat before engaging in strenuous exercise.  Optional post-ride group lunch.
