Hike: Mission Peak
Jan 25 - East Bay

This is a joint hike with the Harvard Clubs of San Francisco and Silicon Valley

Description:
Rising steeply to the east of the city of Fremont, Mission and Monument peaks form a dramatic backdrop to the South Bay. The determined and conditioned hiker who reaches the top of Mission Peak will be rewarded with views of Mount Hamilton to the south, the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, Mt. Tamalpais to the north, and Mt. Diablo and the Sierra Nevada to the northeast. Hawks and vultures share the summit airspace with sailplanes riding the thermals, and a down-to-earth herd of feral goats roams the cliffs. The Peak Trail from Ohlone College is an enjoyable hike to the summit that passes a horse corral and through shaded woodlands and open grasslands.

Distance: ~ 7.3 miles
Elevation Gain: 2145' Strenuous, but a steady grade
Est. Time: 5 hours
$4 per car to park at Ohlone College

Cash or credit cards are accepted by parking lot vending machines.

Water and Porta Potty toilets are available at the trailhead. A Porta Potty toilet is also available about 2.5 miles into hike. There is no water beyond the trailhead.

Dogs are permitted in Mission Peak Regional Preserve, but must be leashed in developed areas and where grazing animals are present

What to Bring:
This is a strenuous hike. Have a good breakfast and bring snacks. The trail has relatively little shade so sunblock and a hat are recommended. Bring plenty of water (at least 2 quarts per person) as none is available beyond the trailhead. It can be breezy at the top so dress in layers. Pack a lunch to eat at the summit.

Directions:
Take exit 16 (Mission Blvd.)from I-680 in Fremont. Head south on Mission Blvd toward Mission San Jose about 1 mile to Ohlone College. Turn left on Pine St. and park in the parking structure on the left just past the baseball field and tennis courts. Walk across the street and follow the Mission Peak Trail Access signs to the trail head. We will follow the Peak Trail to the summit. One can return following the Peak Trail back down to the starting point or loop back on the Grove Trail to its junction with the Peak Trail for a slightly longer but more scenic route.

Ohlone College can also be reached by AC Transit Bus 217 from the Fremont or Warm Springs BART stations.

Carpooling:
Carpooling is highly recommended. A joint carpool site has been set with the Harvard clubs. Here is the link: https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/rp0v9a
We do not assume responsibility for carpool arrangements. We merely do so as a courtesy to help hikers make their own plans.

Rain policy:
If it's raining significantly, the hike is off. If the weather is ambiguous and we decide to cancel, we will send out an email to EventBrite registrants and to mitcnchikers@yahoogroups.com on the morning of the hike. You can easily join the Yahoo email list by going to the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcnchikers/ web page and clicking on the "Join This Group!" button. After you're on the list, you will receive up to a few emails a month about MITCNC hikes.
