MITCNC Event
The Science of Technology Addiction, and its Impact on our Happiness
Jun 12 - Peninsula

Everyone is looking down, especially kids. There is something unnatural about a 15 month old using an iPad to soothe him or herself. Everyone assumes this is just the natural progression of our “tech society”. But what if this is doing harm to us, and to our brains? And what if children are more vulnerable than adults?

Dr. Lustig’s talk will focus on several key questions:

  1. Is there such a thing as Tech Addiction?
  2. Is it similar to or different than drug addiction?
  3. Does technology lead to depression and suicide?
  4. Have our minds been hacked?
  5. Are children at more risk?
  6. Is there anything that can be done about it?

The answers to these questions provide us a blueprint to harness technology for good, and not for ill

Dr. Robert H. Lustig is Professor emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at UCSF, specializing in neuroendocrinology, regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. Dr. Lustig holds a B.Sc. From MIT, an M.D.  from Cornell University Medical College, and a Master’s in Law from U.C. Hastings College of the Law.

Dr. Lustig is the author of two books – “Fat Chance” and “The Hacking of the American Mind” and has fostered a global discussion of metabolic health and nutrition, exposing some of the leading myths that underlie the current pandemic of diet-related disease.
