Every five minutes the ISO forecasts electrical demand and dispatches the lowest cost power plant unit to meet demand while ensuring transmission capacity is available to deliver the power. As the nerve center for the California power grid, the ISO matches buyers and sellers of electricity, facilitating nearly 30,000 market transactions every day. While utilities still own transmission assets, the ISO acts as a traffic controller by routing electrons on the transmission system.  The Folsom control center is one of the most modern control centers in the world and includes the first renewable generation dispatch desk in the country.

The ISO will provide a tour and Q&A session specifically focused on the interests of the MIT Energy & Clean Tech Series.  Our guides will be Clyde Loutan - Senior Advisor - Renewable Energy Integration, Market Analysis and Development and a member of the Smart Grid implementation and strategy team.  The ISO works with California energy and environmental agencies to insure that the transmission system supports the state’s 33% renewable electricity while maintaining grid reliability.   We will ask them to address the issues of renewable electricity, storage solutions, electricity conservation, and demand management.

Attendees are welcome to purchase lunch at the ISO’s on-site café prior to the tour.

Note: Due to security requirements, photo ID’s are required for entry into the ISO facility.
