HANZI (漢字; 汉字; Chinese Words)
Zoom Movie Discussion
Exploring Language and Culture through Chinese Typography

MIT Chinese Alumni Group event, co-sponsored by the MIT Club of Northern California and the MIT Club of Puget Sound:

Please join us for a Zoom movie discussion: to share your perspectives, thoughts and feelings and hear those of others, about of the award-winning 56-minute documentary “HANZI” (2016). Director: Mu-Ming Tsai; Producers: Mu-Ming Tsai, Iris Lai. Kickstarter funded.

Winner of Best Film at the Urban Nomad Film Festival. HANZI explores how a language shapes identity. It encourages audiences to think about their own culture, language and identity by exploring international design, visual culture, and identity through the lens of ancient Chinese texts, calligraphy, printing, to modern signage and crowd-funded efforts to create various digitalized Chinese fonts. The movie also discusses methods for learning the Chinese language.

Many US and Canadian public libraries offer free membership and free streaming of this movie from their Kanopy online movie streaming service that you can access and watch from home. If unsure about how to use or access your local public library's free online streaming services, please call your local librarians for assistance. Public Libraries of Los Angeles, Boston, New York, San Jose, and the surrounding small libraries of the Los Angeles County have these free services -- as confirmed by the local alumni and me.
