I have been working in the area of cybersecurity (in a variety of capacities) for much of my career. I’ve had the chance to work on cryptography, malicious software (malware), phishing / online fraud, web application security, network security, and mobile security, among other areas. I’m currently CTO at RSA. Previously, I’ve served as CTO of Elastica (acquired by Blue Coat), Chief Scientist of Sourcefire (acquired by Cisco), and Chief Scientist of Immunet (acquired by Sourcefire). I’ve also had amazing experiences with Symantec, DoCoMo USA Labs, and Bell Labs. Each role has afforded me remarkable opportunities to work on innovative ideas geared towards helping mitigate the risks we face when our information goes online.

On the side, I have been a guest “faculty” for Khan Academy, a remarkable (and, most importantly, free!) resource for online learning — check out the series on Bitcoin that I did for them.

Aside from technical/engineering work, I really enjoy opportunities to help raise awareness of cybersecurity issues for both broad and technical audiences. I’ve written numerous papers and a couple of books. I’ve also spent a great deal of time speaking externally at conferences as well as talking to customers, analysts, the media, and also elected officials in government (members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, as well as state, local, and international elected officials). I’ve developed over 100 freely available chalk talk videos on cybersecurity (Search “Zulfikar Ramzan Chalk Talks” on YouTube).

Karen Robinson SB '03 '04, MEng '03

Managing Partner

  • Tangible Product Strategy

Team :

Other Affiliations : MBA Harvard

Karen is team leader with experience in new product development and in launching commercial hardware products. Her work centers around the theme that the user experience comes first and techy aspects of the product should be so well-integrated into the product that they disappear.

Karen has been Product Manager for handheld controllers for Google Daydream, led a stealth hardware program in Google ATAP, and worked with Ivan Poupyrev to run Product and Operations on Project Jacquard and Project Soli, technology development for new input technologies. The collaboration Karen set up between Google and Levi’s under Project Jacquard resulted in the “Levi’s Commuter x Jacquard by Google” jacket currently for sale at select Levi’s stores.

In her career before working with Google Karen has done corporate strategy work around advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), commonly seen as precursor technology to self-driving cars. She has worked in technical development of touchscreens (industrial substrate glass at Corning; thin-film deposition systems at Advanced Energy), robotic systems (Bluefin Robotics) and backup power supplies (APC).

Karen’s technical areas of expertise are batteries (lead-acid and lithium-ion) and power systems. She holds degrees in mathematics and EECS from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Why did you decide to volunteer with the MITCNC?

I’ve enjoyed MIT alum events everywhere I’ve lived since graduating – from opportunities to see great technical work, share nerdy interests, or relax into healthy personal balance. This year I want to give back to our community, working with the MITCNC on keeping the MIT community strong and well-connected in the SF bay area.

Tell us a bit about your role with the MITCNC. What are your responsibilities in this position?

Affinity circles – focused, repeated events around specific professional or life pursuits, to build on the successes of the club’s technical talks and social events. Working with my co-lead Arun, our responsibility is to make them happen and see what works for local MIT alums and the club.

What exciting things can we expect to see from your area of focus in the coming months? (e.g., social events, speakers, etc.)

We have events in the work for groups of graduating years, starting with an ’06 – ’96 grad year happy hour. We’re also working on a few professional series – for PMs, Eng Managers, founders, and lawyers – for both networking and mentoring. Get in touch to learn more!

Describe one of your most memorable MIT moments.

It’s gotta be watching the 4th of July fireworks from the wide-open Charles River – with half a dozen people on a sofa we’d mounted on foam pontoons for floatation, and with paddles to help us navigate around party boats. Couchamaran, sofa of the seas.

I cover privately held, venture-backed technology companies for Bloomberg — in a word, startups.

I’ve written a number scoops about Uber and Lyft’s private financial information, including the fact that Uber lost more than $1.2 billion in the first half of 2016. I’ve written stories about Dropbox, Zenefits, Uber, Lyft and Airbnb for Businessweek. I regularly appear on Bloomberg TV, MSNBC, KQED, This Week in Startups and others to talk about the tech industry.

Before working at Bloomberg I was the first employee at The Information. I broke the news that Amazon planned to acquire Twitch — a $1.1 billion acquisition. I wrote about the sharing economy’s independent contractor dilemma before the topic was mainstream. I raised questions about the benevolence of Facebook’s project before the backlash in India.

I’m in regular contact with top Silicon Valley investors, startup CEOs and others. I’m always on the hunt for scoops to break news and challenge the party line. I regularly write anonymously sourced stories about what’s really going on at startups in Silicon Valley. I don’t reveal my sources.

Reach out if you’ve got a news tip or have an idea for a story. I’m on Signal, Telegraph, Whisper etc.

Predictive Playbooks does this by helping salespeople get a hold of more of the right people. uses their proven A.I.-platform called Neuralytics to target likely buyers combined with their cadence engine to help sales reps consistently engage all of their prospects in a personalized way.

A.I. that makes sense. Just like Waze from Google helps drivers get to their destination quickly based on the data from other drivers, Neuralytics uses the collective knowledge of the user base to help you build pipeline quickly. Wanna know which phone number or email address for a prospect is best based on others who have tried before? Wanna know the best time to call or email based on the experience of others? Predictive Playbooks uses Neuralytics to gives sales reps an edge over their competition.

Cadence engine for for all. Team of 10 or 10,000? No problem? Global team? No Problem. International calls? No problem. Legacy email server but still wanna use send tracked email? No Problem.

Predictive Playbooks works side-by-side with your CRM and conveniently syncs all activity data back to your CRM. Since sales reps only spends 18% of their time in CRM, it also works outside your CRM … wherever your reps work.

Al Guido

  • Elevate Sports Ventures

Other Affiliations : The College of New Jersey - BBA

Al Guido was named President of the San Francisco 49ers on February 15, 2016. Guido oversees all key business initiatives for the team.

Prior to being named President, Guido served as the team’s chief operating officer from 2014 to 2016. Under his direction, the construction and year-one operations of Levi’s Stadium exceeded all projections – finishing under budget on construction, with lower public debt than expected, delivering $2.8 million to the City of Santa Clara general fund from non-event revenue in just the first eight months of operations, and fully funding reserve cash balances for the Santa Clara Stadium Authority.

Levi’s Stadium has proven itself as a 360 degree entertainment venue in its first two years under Guido’s leadership. The venue has hosted Super Bowl 50, Wrestlemania 31, Major League Soccer, multiple Pac-12 Championship Football games, International Soccer giants Manchester United and Barcelona, Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Grateful Dead, and NHL Outdoor Classic. This summer the stadium will play host to the largest soccer tournament on U.S. soil since the World Cup with the Copa America Centenario and will host the prestigious College Football National Championship Game, in 2019.

Guido led the sales team that made the stadium a reality, highlighted by the record-setting Stadium Builders License sales campaign for the stadium’s seats and suites that generated nearly half of the $1.2 billion construction cost of the stadium. The team has signed more than a dozen partners investing seven-figures annually for 10 years, including Levi’s Stadium naming rights at $220 million, with more than $650 million in corporate partnership investment.

Creating a technologically enhanced game day experience that is influencing sports venues across North America and around the world, the strategy for Levi’s Stadium developed by Guido and the 49ers executive management team has already garnered international recognition, most notably the Sports Business Journal 2015 Sports Facility of the Year and Venue of the Year at the 2015 Stadium Business Awards in Barcelona, Spain.

Prior to being elevated to his former role as chief operating officer in 2014, Guido worked on behalf of the 49ers and the Santa Clara Stadium Authority as the senior vice president of global sales for Legends beginning in 2010. In that capacity, he led a suite and SBL sales initiative for Levi’s Stadium that achieved record-setting results by totaling more than $530 million.

Before joining Legends, Guido served as sales manager for the Dallas Cowboys. In that role, he managed the premium seat department for Cowboys Stadium (now AT&T Stadium) that broke industry records for PSL sales totaling over $600 million.

Guido joined the Cowboys after having served as the senior director of ticket sales for the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League. During his term, the Coyotes achieved the first revenue increases in the 10-year history of the franchise and finished in the top five in the NHL for new business sales.

A native of Washington Township, NJ, Guido began his career in the sports and entertainment industry with Comcast-Spectacor, owner and operator of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms, Comcast SportsNet and the Wachovia Complex. Guido later served as director of business development for the Lakewood Blueclaws (a minor-league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies).

A Board Member of City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley, a contributor to the Navy Seal Foundation, Board Member of the Coach K/Fuqua School of Business, and serving on the Advisory Board at the San Jose State Institute for Study of Sport, Society & Social Change, and the Advisory Council at the Positive Coaching Alliance, Guido received his bachelor of business administration from the College of New Jersey, where he played wide receiver for the school’s football program. In 2016, Guido was named to the Forty Under 40 list by both the Sports Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times, for demonstrating industry excellence and innovation early in his career. He and his wife, Thea, have three daughters, Estella, Sloane and Tatum.

It’s my dream and my mission to give computers the ability to think about the world more like a person and less like a machine. Equally important is putting this innovation into practice in a way that effects real business outcomes and transforms our everyday lives. I have twenty years of experience in directing and doing cutting edge research, operationalizing it, and using it to drive real outcomes. In many ways, I’m a product of the MIT Media Lab which taught me that technology is most valuable when it dreams big, thinks about it’s users, and doesn’t forget to make a demo as soon as possible.

I have done research in word embeddings, transfer learning, multilingual NLP, and machine learning. I invented crowd-sourcing for artificial intelligence in the 1990s. I spent over ten years helping companies who worked with MIT understand how to succeed in innovation and bring research into the enterprise. I’ve also on the other side, founding two companies and partnering to bring additional research advances into the market and into the enterprise.

At the Media Lab, I directed the Digital Intuition Group. I run the ConceptNet project a large open data repository of common sense knowledge freely available online which I co-started with Marvin Minsky and Push Singh in 1999.

I’m also passionate about education and using data to help solve world problems. I’m an avid speaker about data and natural language processing.
