Join fellow alumni and the MIT Clubs Western New York and Rochester for an evening with Ed Hunter '79, Engineering leader at Netflix.
Ed Hunter '79, Director of Performance and Operating Systems Engineering, Netflix, leads the Performance and Operating Systems group for the streaming service at Netflix. His team is responsible for helping tune, configure and benchmark the elements that comprise the Netflix streaming control plane. The team has created a number of tools such as Vector and FlameScope.
As the director of performance and operating systems engineering at Netflix, Hunter says his goal is to keep users happy and prevent at all costs the red spinning wheel—that dreaded circle in the center of a black screen that appears when the show or movie you’re trying to watch is loading. “We want the experience to be as seamless as possible, from the time you come to us until the time you’re done watching whatever it is you want to watch,” says Hunter, and to optimize viewing, he says the company is constantly tracking all sorts of user data. The team does this through benchmarking, experimenting, recommending new approaches, building tools and prototyping different performance enhancements.
