| Black Mountain (S. Bay) Sunday, March 14, 2010 10:00 AM (***DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME*** set clocks forward 1 hr.) Distance: 10.5 mi RT Elevation Gain: 2280' Difficulty: STRENUOUS Est. Time: 5-6 hours RSVP REQUIRED Description: Black Mt. is the highest peak in the northern Santa Cruz Mountains. We stroll along the Adobe Creek Trail in Hidden Villa Farm to connect to the Black Mountain Trail in Rancho San Antonio OSP. The climb begins moderately, then we steadily and steeply ascend a ridge to the summit, an open field of scattered rocks suitable for lunch seating. Your effort is amply rewarded with panoramic views of the entire Bay Area. Please observe that this is a strenuous hike. Our trail is out and back,
however, so you can easily turn around and leave early if necessary.

While much of the trail is shady, the final climb and summit are exposed,
though it won't be hot in winter. Please bring layers and gloves to be
prepared for sun or wind. Note: There is a $5 parking fee, so bring cash.
Directions: Take 280 to El Monte/Moody Rd. exit. Follow signs to El Monte Rd. West and Foothill College. Drive past the college entrance. At first stop sign make left onto Moody Rd. Continue for 1.7 miles. Entrance to Hidden Villa is on the left. Pay at entrance station then go straight 0.25 miles to large dirt parking lot. Carpooling: Carpooling is always a nice idea. If people want to get into a carpool, we've set up an unmoderated discussion group you can use to set up carpools. To join it, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcnchikers_carpooling and then send a message to mitcnchikers_carpooling@groups.yahoo.com, or post from the web interface at the above address. This requires you to get a free yahoo account; sorry about this, but in our experience, they've been harmless and respect your spam preferences. Unfortunately (cynics cackle here), the old email signup interface seems to have stopped working. In any case, in the message, be sure to include where you're coming from, contact information and how many of you there are. Rain policy: If there's any ambiguity about the weather on the day of the hike, you can check the forecast the morning of the hike -- a good source of up-to-date weather info is http://tinyurl.com/yc4leax.
If it's raining significantly, the hike is off. If the weather is ambiguous, we will send out an email to the mitcnchikers@yahoogroups.com list on the morning of the hike. We will also try to post an announcement here on this web page. Disclaimers: This is a strenuous hike, so please join us if you are physically and
mentally prepared.
Joining any hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume any and all risks associated with the activities.
