Each of the Redwood City Schools listed below would welcome mentors and tutors... and the new McKinley Institute of Technology now called MIT, would be overjoyed to have real MIT alumnae come to assist students with learning. The principals of schools with mostly Spanish populations, said they would be delighted to have adults join them in any capacity -- to play pick-up basketball at lunchtime, to read with students, to explore science with them, to work with small groups of children, whether remedial or gifted. All the schools would appreciate guest speakers for Career Day, volunteers to teach after school and intercession enrichment classes (science, inventorship - whatever you love), Adelante School needs help organizing/mentoring a science fair and volunteers to help them enter the Lego Robotics Competition next year. If you have a passion -- with technology, without it, anything with educational value -- the principals would like to hear from you! Contact: website http://www.friendsforyouth.org, or call Elsy Arevalo, (650) 482-2867. Notes: The program matches adults with kids from South San Francisco to Sunnyvale on the peninsula. The program involves a 4-hour training program for new mentors. Each mentor will then be assigned a Counselor, who monitors the relationship throughout the program. The people running the program will also help set up one-time events if people don't have time to mentor, e.g. a Science Day Workshop. They ask for a12-month relationship for new tutors. Some kids need specific tutoring help, but many are just looking for friends/mentors without a tutoring component. You can volunteer to tutor at any time slot you choose of at least 90 minutes, 2 days/week within the above time ranges. They will arrange for the kids to be there at whatever time works for you. A 4th program for the brightest students in grades 2-8 is called "Center for a New Generation" and meets at Menlo Oaks School. Most kids currently are middle and elementary school age. Dinnie would be happy to start a tutoring program for high school kids if a couple of us volunteer. Menlo Park/ East Palo Alto Several distinct programs need tutors.
