Est. Time: 5.5 hours

Description:

Our late-spring/summer hiking series goes further afield to Marin to beat the
heat and see some spectacular sights; it's a long drive, but should be worth it.

Alamere falls is one of California's few ocean bluff waterfalls,
dropping 40' off of a seaside cliff into the ocean. The hike itself
is on the Coast trail, among some of the most spectacular coastal and
ocean scenery you'll ever see. Little inlets deserted beaches and big
dropoffs abound throughout this area.

The hike is right near the semi-secret hippie refuge of Bolinas, where
they've been known to remove all the signs so nobody can find them, so
pay attention to the directions. willya?

What to Bring:

Minimum 2 quarts of water per person recommended.
Sun hat, sunscreen, lunch, and snacks.
Bathing suit, if you want to take advantage of some nice lakes on a
hot day.

There will be poison oak, so wear long pants.

Directions:
Note: The area near Bolinas is tricky, as the locals tend to remove
all the relevant street signs. So be careful out there.

Take Hwy 101 N from SF across the Golden Gate.

Get off at the Stinson Beach/Hwy 1 Exit. Drive West to the T
intersection (there's an Arco station on your left, gas up as
required, there isn't much gas along the rest of the route)

Turn Left, following Hwy 1 towards Stinson Beach. This road is quite
twisty for quite a long distance, so be careful. Follow this through
Stinson Beach (40 mins drive time if traffic isn't too bad)

You will pass Audubon Canyon Ranch on your right. Bolinas Bay will be
on your left. Just after the end of the bay (3 mi) at Mile Marker 17,
there will be a mostly-unsigned (the locals remove the sign to hide
Bolinas from outsiders) 4-way intersection. Turn Left.

You will come to a T-intersection. Take a left. This is
Bolinas-Olema Rd.

You will come to another T-intersection. Take a left onto Horseshoe
Hill Rd (which is actually just an alias for Bolinas-Olema Rd.)

Turn right onto Mesa road. If you reach the town of Bolinas, you've
gone too far.
Follow Mesa road to the end, 5 mi. The last 1.3 miles are
well-maintained dirt road, OK for normal cars if you don't mind
getting a bit dusty.

We will meet by the Palomarin trailhead in the Parking lot.

Driving time: 2:15 from the Valley, 1 hour from the Marin side of the
Golden Gate Bridge.

Carpooling:

Carpooling is always a nice idea. If people want to get into a
carpool, we've set up an unmoderated discussion group you can use to
set up carpools. To join it, go to
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcnchikers_carpooling
and then send a message to mitcnchikers_carpooling@groups.yahoo.com,
or post from the web interface at the above address.  This requires
you to get a free yahoo account; sorry about this, but in our
experience, they've been harmless and respect your spam preferences.
Unfortunately (cynics cackle here), the old email signup interface
seems to have stopped working. In any case, in the message, be sure
to include where you're coming from, contact information and how many
of you there are.

Rain policy:

If there's any ambiguity about the weather on the day of the hike, you can
check the forecast the morning of the hike -- a good source of up-to-date
weather info is http://tinyurl.com/5cy6qx

If it's raining significantly, the hike is off. If the weather is
ambiguous, we will send out an email to the mitcnchikers@yahoogroups.com
list on the morning of the hike. You can easily join that email list by
going to the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcnchikers/ web page and
clicking on the "Join This Group!" button. After you're on the list,
you'll receive emails about each upcoming hike ~1 week in advance. The
volume on that list is very low (~2 emails/month), so spam won't be a
problem.

Cautionary note:

This is a moderately strenuous hike, so please join us if you are physically
and mentally prepared.

Joining any hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume any and all
risks associated with the activities. By registering or attending this
event, participants agree to the conditions posted at:
